Our Lady of the Way Catholic Parish Primary School supports Catholic families to educate their children within a Christian environment. This is our core purpose.
There are families other than Catholic who seek enrolment at our school.
To this end we enrol families who are not Catholic but who value the ethos of the school as expressed in our Mission Statement and are supportive of the Catholic tradition in which the school was founded.
Our Lady of the Way School offers Prep to Year 7. Once families have enrolled their child into Prep, there is no need for an enrolment application from pre year one to year one.
Because we do not have unlimited vacancies within the school, the criteria below is applied to enrolment applications in the following priority order:
- (a) Children with brothers and sisters already attending the school
- (b) Catholic families contributing towards the life and worship of the Parish
- (c) Families being transferred from another Catholic school
- (d) Practising Catholics from outside the Parish
- (e) Non practising Catholic families living within our Parish
- (f) Families practising another Christian religion
- (g) Others
The selection process will take into consideration specific pastoral needs of families. The decision to accept or reject an enrolment application always rests with the Principal and the Parish Priest.
BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT
In dealing with behavioural difficulties, we are very conscious of the pastoral needs of the children.
To us it is important that any behaviour is dealt with in a way that helps children learn. Corporal punishment, mindless writing of lines and the like do not serve to help children become responsible. We use a three phase approach to behaviour management.
- Children must understand what it is they have done wrong; otherwise they will see the consequence as unjust and will harbour feelings of resentment and anger which are not helpful.
We put a lot of energy into this area as both a preventative measure and as a learning tool. Because we live in a community, all actions affect somebody. Hence we expect an appropriate apology to those concerned.
Every action has natural consequences. Therefore any punishment must reflect the nature of the occurrence so that children can see the relationship between action and consequence.
- Any major misbehaviour or constant pattern of misbehaviour is always dealt with in partnership with families.
This team approach is critical. We have few behavioural problems at this school because we work together. Mutual support is an essential element of community.
- In dealing with behavioural issues the teachers work within a Behaviour Support Policy as set by our school board.
Issues regarding bullying also fall under this policy.
