Year Three
TERM ONE OVERVIEW

Integrated Unit
In Year 3 this term we are taking an integrated approach to the Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE), Health and Mathematics. We are investigating ‘Our Healthy Community”. This incorporates; nutrition and healthy eating, production and processing of foods and being healthy-emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually and socially.
Initially in Mathematics, we will be revising basic number concepts. We will focus on place value and the hundreds board to teach students the concept of number and what numbers mean. Maths games will be used as part of our programme to help the children gain greater number awareness. Students will also conduct a survey on the contents of Year 3’s lunchbox over a set period. They will collect data and contribute to a whole class collection of data. Students will also be responsible for displaying their data in a bar graph. They will then conduct an Investigation of Food Labels and create a Healthy Eating Plan.
In Science and Technology students will design and develop their own toy that requires energy to make it move. Children will draw and label a design template and use the template in the construction of their toy.
In English throughout Term 1, students will learn the components involved in following and writing a procedure. They will explore craft activities, science experiments, recipes and games. Students will show that they can sequence a recipe using the correct format, they will locate information in a recipe (procedure genre) and write their own procedure.
Religious Education
Our unit in Religion this term is ‘Acting Justly and Peaceful Actions’. The key areas covered include; right and wrong behaviours, factors influencing moral living and peaceful relationships. Students will identify ways of relating peacefully and learn about factors that influence theirs and other’s behaviour. They will consider ways they can be a good friend to others and identify the personal and social consequences of being a good friend. |
